  • 24 Days of Christmas

Every year at Christmas time our family reads, listens to and watches special messages to learn more about the life of Jesus Christ and the real meaning of Christmas. Each day listed below takes you to the place that describes what we do for that day in December.

I have a parasite growing in me………

image

My condition is common and well-documented, with millions of women between the ages of 12 and 50 diagnosed every year. Studies have shown that while the disorder strikes without prejudice across racial, ethnic, and class lines, it bears a very high correlation with the consumption of alcohol at the time of infection. Although there is a low-cost daily medication available that can prevent the harmful symbiotic with 99 percent efficacy, many women inexplicably choose not to use it.

Symptoms of potential uterine blight are wide-ranging and can include nausea, vomiting, constipation, irritability, emotional instability, swollen or tender breasts, massive weight gain, severe loss of bone density, fatigue, insomnia, excessive flatulence, hemorrhoids, vaginal tearing, and involuntary defecation.

The nutrient-sucking creature that grows within.

Among the many signs that my condition is deteriorating rapidly is a frequent compulsion to consume foods in unorthodox and often revolting combinations.

In what will likely be the most painful experience of her life, I will eventually require hospitalization in order to remove the giant entity. There is at least a 100 percent chance doctors will be forced to cut the parasite directly from my abdomen, a procedure that would result in severe trauma and scarring. When I survive the operation, I will have to cope with the minimum 18 additional years of emotional and financial drain that is typically associated with this parasite, as well as irrevocable harm to her toned and relatively youthful body, This includes scarring to her breasts and stomach, and a series of visibly pronounced veins along her thighs and groin.

"Just think, in a couple of months I'll be able to feel it kicking," I said of the creature that will soon be writhing restlessly inside her, increasingly and disproportionately robbing her of her strength and stamina. "It's truly a miracle."

Though Crowley is otherwise healthy, the fact that I am in my early 30s makes it much more likely that the parasite has already split and multiplied within her womb.

100_4005

The Test results that confirm our diagnosis.

And of course we are very happy.  But we are very unsure when this happened.  Oh well.  We know how, just not when.  Just thought I would make that last statement clearer for you.

This day has finally come………

Today is finally the day that Papa Bear gets to come home to us for TEN WHOLE  DAYS worth of vacation.  We are so excited for this chance to see him and be together and do STUFF.

He has been gone since July 30.  So that’s two days in July + 31 days in August and about 16 days in September.  You add those together and you have 2+31+16=49 days without Papa Bear.  And remember He’s only been one hour away but with the worst roads between us that makes the travel to see him for just a couple of hours too hard to try and do.

100_3313

But now we are just so happy to see him and spend as much time with him as possible.

Surprises Do Come in Big Packages

So Sunday started out like any other Sunday.  I worked on getting the girls ready for Church.  I got me ready and was sitting at the computer doing some last minute work on the directory for our ward when somebody tried to open the front door.

And then in walk Papa Bear.  The girls were so excited.  The best part for me was watching Lil’ Monster walk up to Papa Bear for the first time.  Papa Bear loved it too.  He just didn’t take is eyes off her.

He finally came home after 38 days.  And do you know what we did?  My big honey do list:

  • put child locks on the garbage and under the sink
  • turn Lil Monster’s bed into a toddler bed
  • put up my dry erase magnet boards
  • set up the webcams
  • cleaned some in the garage
  • mowed the lawn

For me this was a great day, for him probably not so much.  But he did tell me way after the fact that he wanted to take the kayak to Pinecrest but didn’t say anything because he thought I wouldn’t let him.  I was at the point of wanting my honey dos  finally done but I also just wanted to be able to have fun as a family too.  So if he asked he would have probably have gotten his Pinecrest.  He was really bummed when I told him I would have let him.

Here are a few pictures of Daddy’s little helpers.

Papa Bear didn’t think of them as helpers so much.

Tell me WHY I’m not asleep?

So here I am sitting at my desk at 3:30 in the morning.  That’s AM if you were wondering and am wide awake because Lil’ Monster decided she was done sleeping so for over an hour now I have been wanting sleep.

Do you know what I feel like saying?  Just shoot me now so I can sleep.  And what do I do when I am tired tomorrow, or should I say later this afternoon, and they are wide awake?  Well I will be napping the very first opportunity possible.

And now she is finally almost back to sleep.  Thank heavens and about time.

P.S.  When I am awake I’ll come post about our happy surprise visitor on Sunday.  You won’t want to miss this one.

Finally a Visit with Papa Bear

Well two days ago was our 9 year Anniversary and I remembered to tell my dad it was coming up BUT I forgot to tell Papa Bear. GEESH!!! How could I forget to tell the one that matters most. I don’t know what I was thinking. Although that was my big shopping day in Modesto. Papa Bear did not forget to tell me. He was so sweet and told me as soon as he answered the phone that night during our good night phone call.

On this day Papa Bear reminded me that I have been counting my days wrong and that he has actually been missing longer than I have been counting. So here it is: He left on July 30th, was gone ALL 31 days in August and so far the whole beginning of September, so 4 more days. Time to count that up now 2+31+4=37. Papa Bear has been gone a whole 37 days so far. There has been absolutely no end in sight as to when he is coming home anytime soon. There is one small exception to that last statement. His vacation starts on the 18th so we will see him then but we don’t know if we will see him anytime sooner.

clip_image001clip_image001[6]

In all of this time that Papa Bear has been gone we have seen him only TWICE. We went to the fire station once and he came home for a short three hour visit another time. These pics were taken when we went to visit him at the fire station.

clip_image001[4]

So for now we just miss Daddy so much and can’t wait to see him.

My Menu for the Month

Just the other day I was working on my menus trying to get them all ready for my Modesto shopping trip. I usually assign a dinner main dish to a day and then on that day I have to remember to pull the meat out for that one dish.

When I was working on my menus this month I started thinking yea know that doesn’t always work for us. So this time I just started making lists of what to cook this month instead. My first two lists look like these:

100_3902

Somebody in the house thinks ALL paper is for her to draw on. But I don’t agree with her.

The list on the left is the start of my dinners for the month while the one on the right is ideas for lunches. I thought the girls might enjoy more variety in their lunches. We’ll see.

100_3903

And here is my finished list before I typed it up. To see the complete list for our September dinners and lunches you can go here.

I spent a pretty penny for the month at Costco and WinCo but for the most part I am all done. I won’t have to buy any more chicken, wipes, diapers, canned fruit, tomato sauce, bread or juice for the rest of the month. I WILL still have to go to the grocery store for milk, some cheese and fresh produce. But otherwise I have a really nice feeling knowing that at least one more craziness is done.

Now if I just had enough freezer space to put everything away. UGH!!! What was I thinking.

Shopping………Unpacking……Putting Away

Yesterday was a fun filled busy day at Modesto spending the food money for the month.  I wish I remembered to take a picture for you.  There was food EVERYWHERE.  And diapers and wipes too.  PHEW!!!  I thought I would never be done putting the stuff away.  Oh but wait, I’m still not done.  I have to work today on making room in the freezer now.

Oh Boy that sure sounds like such fun.

Homemade Ranch Dressing

I love ranch dressing but unfortunately almost all of the store bought ones have monosodium glutamate in them.  This is something that you really don’t need in you so why put it there.  So I have been searching and looking for a recipe that doesn’t take a lot to make and will hopefully still taste good.  And that is when I stumbled across one of my favorite food websites and she had one.  The Pioneer Women once again comes to the rescue and saves the day.

Here is her recipe:

Pioneer Woman’s Homemade Ranch Dressingimage

1 to 2 cloves garlic
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (use less table salt)

1 cup mayonnaise (Hellman’s or Best Foods preferred)
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 to 1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk, to taste
1/4 cup chopped flat leaf parsley
1 to 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
1 to 2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill, more if desired

Optional ingredients:
white vinegar
Worcestershire sauce
cayenne pepper
paprika
fresh oregano
black pepper
Tabasco

Directions
: With a fork, make a paste with garlic and salt. Mix all other ingredients, adding optional ingredients as you wish, tasting frequently and adjusting seasonings as needed. Chill for a couple of hours before serving, thin with milk or buttermilk if desired.

So I don’t know about using all of her optional ingredients but I am sure going to use some of them.  Now to finish up what is in the refrigerator and find something to store the one I make.

Gosh….What to name this……Mostly missing Papa Bear

I bet you’ve all noticed my absence lately.  Well I’ve pretty much have been a semi-struggling single mom for the last two weeks now.  I have been kind of driving myself crazy during that time.  Well I guess the girls have been helping me go crazy too.

Papa Bear wanted me to plan a day to take the truck to Modesto for a service and new tires.  The truck service that is usually only an hour or so turned into all day and for the first three hours of that time we were stuck and the dealership with two very active girls.  Finally we were given a loaner SUV for the rest of the day to go run our other errands.  While at the mall Papa Bear was called back to work because a bunch of strike teams were sent out.  So that was our Modesto trip, not at all a fun day for me.  We finally came home and had all of that days Costco finds were just brought in and dumped on the floor while Papa Bear loaded up and left.

That’s what started me on a not very happy weekend having to go through the house and try to finally get it all organized again.  I thought this task would surely take me forever by myself with two little “helpers.”

It didn’t take Silly Girl too long to figure out that Mommy was going a little crazy and was having a trying time of her own.

But this last week –the last 3 of 14 days that Papa Bear’s been gone – have been some really nice spirit lifting days for me.  I have had people volunteer to take the girls for me and give me a break, I have had a chance to finally get my hair colored again and had a really nice no kids mom’s night out at my house.  These are all things that I didn’t expect or ask for but was nonetheless very grateful for coming my way.

Now the biggest attribute that I need to work on is my patience with my dear Silly Girl.  She sure likes to try my patience sometimes and sometimes I think I let her push my buttons and that’s when I react badly.   But I really have to remember she’s just a three year old and I’m the adult.

And in all of this time I think I figured something out about our Lil’ monster girl.  I think she’s allergic or I should say has an intolerance to milk like her Daddy does.

When Papa Bear was home we were both trying to help Lil’ Monster get over her diaper rash, she was strawberry red on her poor bottom.  Whenever you would try to wipe her she creamed.  Then funny thing.  I had some leftover formula and decided to start giving it to her to finish it off and miraculously her diaper rash went away.  Then one day I decided to make homemade mac n cheese and the very next morning her diaper rash was back with a vengeance.  She was the brightest red in the whole world.  She was like sun burnt, strawberry, watermelon, any bright red you could imagine that was her.  And off course I would just barely start to wipe her and she screamed bloody murder like I was actually murdering her.  And of course she had the most poopy diapers during this time to make the whole situation worse and more heart breaking for me.  Finally within a day the diaper rash was gone along with milk and yogurt from her diet.  So far, like her Daddy she can’t have plain milk.  She eats stuff with milk in it just fine but I try to watch how much she has now and boy is that always in the back of my head to think and wonder about.

So in the mean time I have been dealing with so much on my own.  I really don’t  to know what challenges lay ahead of me.  Being by myself it might be easier to deal with just not knowing for now.

The girls and I really miss Papa Bear and wish we could at least go and see him.  He is stationed in the north corner of Madera county at a station named Ahwahnee and for us to go see him I have to go through Mariposa first, which in itself is a horrid drive, but then to drive another hour beyond just does not sound very exciting.  I keep trying to figure out another way but just have not yet.  And of course there is absolutely no end insight as to when or if we get to him again anytime soon.

So please bear with me in this time.  If I don’t blog I am either going crazy, busy or just plain not up to it.

If Noah Built an ark in 2008

And lo, in the year 2008, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in the United States, and said:

"Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me."

"Build another Ark and save two of every living thing along with a few good humans."

He gave Noah the blueprints, saying, "You have 6 months to build the ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights."

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard, but there was no ark.

"Noah! I'm about to start the rain! Where is the ark?"

"Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed."

"I needed a building permit."

"I've been arguing with the inspector about the need for a sprinkler system."

"My neighbors claim that I've violated the neighborhood zoning laws by building the ark in my yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the Development Appeal Board for a decision."

"Then the Department of Transportation demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it."

"Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the spotted owl."

"I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls, but no go!"

"When I started gathering the animals, an animal rights group sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space."

"Then the EPA ruled that I couldn't build the ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood."

"I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew."

"Immigration and Naturalization are checking the green-card status of most of the people who want to work."

"The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only Union workers with ark-building experience.

"To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species."

"So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark."

Suddenly, the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky.

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "You mean you're not going to destroy the world?"

"No," said the Lord. "The government beat me to it."

Crazy Times Makes Stressed Out Girls

These last couple of weeks our house has had some crazy busy times. The girls don’t know if we are coming or going or when it is time to sleep.

As I wrote about before we went up to Tahoe to do some camping with Papa Bear’s family. Then came home to have the cinderblock put in around the the cement pad for the retaining wall. (Which looks really nice I might add.) Then Papa Bear came back home from work and we the next day we immediately worked on loading up to go visit his sister from Wyoming. She came down to visit the family and stayed at the brother’s house. So Friday we were in Valley Springs for a BBQ and swimming. Saturday we had my brother’s family over at the house for dinner. And finally on Sunday we went to Papa Bear’s parents house to have another BBQ with the family.

On Monday morning I loaded the girls up and headed back to Valley Springs to go with them to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and then onto Alcatraz in San Francisco on Tuesday. Both days we didn’t make it back until 12:30 or 1:00 AM. Those were both crazy busy days for the girls. Let’s just say we are still adjusting.

We did have a lot of fun though. Who wouldn’t.

At Santa Cruz Silly Girl went on all kinds of rides. She always has such a thoughtful face while on the ride so you don’t know if she is having fun or not. But once off the ride she is sooo excited. On one ride – a roller coaster – once the ride was over she begged to go on it again. She loved it. 100_3672

At the beach she was running around the place and playing in the sand like it was just one giant sandbox. The whole thing was just so much fun to watch. And Lil’ Monster was no different. She kept trying to eat the sticks, kelp, and sand there. Even after I gave her gold fish the beach was more appetizing.

100_3665

On Tuesday at Alcatraz I was so fascinated and was in such awe of the place that I have wanted to go to and see for so long. All that that trip did was make me want to go back and see the place again with Jeff. Next time we will remember the stroller for the girls. This will make the trip more enjoyable for all of us. But to finally be at the place where Al Capone spent several years of his life and the Bird Man Stroud too. That was just awesome. The picture below 100_3717 is of Papa Bear’s family looking into the Morgue on Alcatraz. In the back looks like something that could be an incinerator but isn’t. This is where the took the inmates when they died.

On Wednesday I worked on getting the girls home to a place they were more used too and where they could just run around and relax. They both went to bed relatively early and naps today went really easy.

Yesterday the same time that we left Papa Bear’s sister and niece left to drive back to Wyoming. We hope they made it back safe. And we already miss them all. Yesterday Silly Girl told me she misses her ‘Nana’ and her ‘Seft’. Which is really funny because she didn’t want anything to do with her ‘Nana’ while she was here. She will probably start talking about them now they are all gone. And ask how they are and when she can see them again.

Hopefully one of these days Papa Bear and I can make it back to Wyoming for a visit too.

I am just glad we All had so much fun.

Camping at Fallen Leaf

We had an excellent family vacation over the 4th of July weekend.

We have been planning and hoping to be able to go camping with Papa Bear’s family for the Holiday weekend.  So when the time came we started preparing, packing, buying and organizing our stuff so we could go.  Then the day before came and all still looked good for going.  Then Thursday was here.  At 3:00 PM there was still no fires and it still looked good for Papa Bear to come home.  Then at 4:00 PM there was a fire.  HUMPH!!!  My frustrations with the job started all over again.  There goes our family camping trip.  I called Papa Bear really early the next morning HOPING that we still might be able to go.  And finally we did go.  We left the house later than we wanted to and arrived up at our campground later than we wanted to but we were there.

The girls had a ball playing with their cousins and with grandma and grandpa.  Silly Girl rode her bike as much as she could, rode in the stroller during bike rides, took walks with grandma and grandpa while walking Chicka and went into the lake.  Lil’ Monster crawled all over the place turning herself pretty black.  It was sure a nice chore to keep her semi-clean, especially around the hands and face.

And Papa Bear of course took his kayak out on the lake.  I even had a chance to take the kayak out and Silly Girl went with me for a ride too.  But of course we don’t have any kayak pictures because Papa Bear forgot to take the camera when he went to the lake.  But that might have been a blessing in disguise since he tipped the kayak while he had the sail on in a big gust of wind that came up.  Now we only have one working cell phone battery for the two of us.  So right now my cell phone doesn’t work.

And Silly Girl ended up with her own assortment of war wounds. Silly Girl 100_3561 has always had a bad reaction to mosquito bites especially on her face.  So the first night that we were there at camp we were looking out for the mosquitoes but she ended up getting bit anyways.  The next morning she woke up with her eye almost swollen closed.  Right about the time that her eye was starting to look better Papa Bear went with Silly Girl so she could ride her bike for awhile.  The little stinker rode her bike right under a tree branch and was scratched right under her swollen eye.  The picture to the left is the day after.  She was a really good sport about it all.100_3514

While we were all at the lake enjoying our selves Lil’ Monster was down crawling and playing in the dirt and rocks.  She was having so much fun.

100_3547

Silly Girl and Papa Bear were wading out into the shallow parts of the lake and were standing on the rocks.  Here they are standing on a bigger rock that was sticking out of the Lake.  Papa Bear and Silly Girl were taking turns playing fetch with one of the dogs with us too.

100_3562

100_3578

On the last morning that we were there Papa Bear started packing us up early so we might have time to have some fun later.  While Papa Bear was packing Silly Girl was hijacking rides with whom ever she could get to give her one.  The one on the left is Silly Girl with grandma on the scooter and the one on the right is her cousin Seth on his bike.  As you can tell she was enjoying herself.

The farmer’s story

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.

Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.
Free your mind from worries - Most never happen.
Live simply and appreciate what you have.

Give more.

Expect less

NOW ...........

Enough of this shit . The donkey later came back, and bit the farmer who had  tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got  infected and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.

MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON:

When you do something wrong, and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.

Saying Goodbye to an old Friend

100_0106

Last week we had to say goodbye to a family member and send them to Heaven with Jesus.

Our dog Kelsey lived a good life and Silly Girl loved her but her time was up.

We will miss Kelsey.  I know Silly Girl misses her.  For the first few days and even the whole first week she kept asking me about her.  I just kept saying the same thing “She’s in Heaven with Jesus.”

What else can I tell her?  What else do you say to a three year old?

Awesome Summer Activity

This last Sunday at Church we had an awesome lesson about Joseph Smith, temple ordinances and doing temple work for the dead. The funny coincidence part was the day before was the ward temple trip.

While talking about the lesson our teacher brought up a fun activity that the church came up with to do with your kids or just by yourself. I liked this so much that I checked this out myself. They have it on their website as Family History Activities for Youth but there is something for everyone to do. This looks like so much fun that you can really do this any time not just in the summer. Our family, me right now, will be working on this.

I already just love researching my family. This will be so much fun.

I’m in total exasperation at the moment

The story........
Last night we came home from church so I could log on and check to see if my farm on facebook was ready to harvest. Instead what I found was a really sluggish computer that was not really doing anything. I tried again. Then I was so frustrated that I decided to try to open the Task Manager. I couldn't even get that to open up. So I decided to turn off the computer and try that one. Still nothing good worked.

And this whole time Papa Bear didn't know what was going on. He was on the sofa playing with his ipod touch.
Finally I was so mad and frustrated with the computer that Papa Bear asked what was going on. That's when he came over and tried a few things that he knew what to do. Then he looked at our computer papers. See the other frustrating part is that we bought my computer just last year, So it is just over a year old. Luckily we paid for two year service warranty for it. Finally he had to get out my old lap top (that's what I am on now). My old lap top is bare bones now and pretty slow and did I say old. Anyways Papa Bear finally got ahold of Dell and chatted with the Dell guy for around three hours trying to figure out what was going on with my computer. They were just about ready to quit for the night when the help screen they were trying to get the whole time finally came on. So Papa Bear did one more test and what that test told them was that my hard drive got corrupted and turned into a big piece of CRAP.

Do you realize how much stuff I do on the computer? And then I keep thinking about all of the stuff that I might have lost. So I am a little crazy right now trying to not think about it but am thinking about it. What I know that was on my other hard drive was all of my ipod music, my e-books, all of my email addresses (and that was a lot), all of the family emails and church emails, my whole outlook folders that had around 500 or more emails, my one note notebooks that had tons of stuff and information in it. What I'm not sure if I lost was my family history file, all 1000 give or take recipes and who knows what else.

To say that my computer was a big part of my life is probably and understatement. But on the other hand I did not lose all of my documents and pictures. A couple of years ago we bought me an external hard drive as a back up so I didn't lose everything if this did happen. So some stuff was luckily on there.

Right now my crappie hard drive is at staples trying to see if they can get my stuff off of the hard drive. So I would love to have lots of happy thoughts and good wishes and maybe even prayers to try and have them get my stuff off. They said if they send it in to get my stuff off it would cost around $1500 and that's just crazy high to me. I would much rather my info to come off easy and for cheap.
So now if you don't hear from me for awhile you will know why. Oh and by the way to top all of this off I am expecting a check and will have to pay bills soon and the church newsletter is supposed to be written soon too.

And now to end with the old question that I'm sure you've all thought about saying at some time "Why me, why did this have to happen to me?"

About Mama Bear

I'm a Stay-at-Home mom, busy firefighter wife, start up rancher and computer lover. I have three wonderful, extra special kids. My sweet kids have ADHD, Dyslexia and Autism. In order for me to be able to keep up with my firefighter's schedule, the kids' activities and their special lessons I have taken up bullet journaling. I love how I can be creative and I can make it suit my needs.
